Hays County is located on the Edwards Plateau in the United States. It is part of the Austin-Round Rock metropolitan area, with the county seat being San Marcos. Recently, Standard and Poor's Financial Services, LLC, announced Hays County's upgrade from AA to AA+ for the next limited tax bond issue. The Hays County Transportation Department is preparing to begin improving low-lying water crossings at Francis Harris Lane, SE of San Marcos.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 0.22 square miles (0.58 km), all of which is mainland. For every 100 females there were 89.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.8 males. The town of Hays was founded in the 1970s following a move to incorporate the Country Estates subdivision.
