San Marcos is located within the Austin-Round Rock metropolitan area and on the Interstate 35 corridor between Austin and San Antonio. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 0.22 square miles (0.58 km), all mainland.

In the city, the population was dispersed, with 19.7% under the age of 18, 7.3% from 18 to 24, 24.0% from 25 to 44, 37.3% from 45 to 64 and 11.6% aged 65 and over. The median age was 44 years. For every 100 females there were 89.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.8 males.
